Do you want to know one of the most emblematic estuaries and islands of Galicia? This estuary was an important way for Norman, Muslim and Saracen pirates as their aim was to attack Santiago to Compostela by that time, they used Cortegada´s island, very close to Arousa´s island as a camp base and port of landing before they get back to their homelands. This estuary is important as well for being one of the maritime routes of St James way, called Translatio.
Apart from stories of pirates, this land is an area of hard workers who live working as fishermen or gathering shellfish, anonymous people who create wealth, culture and intangible heritage. In this route we will know different traditional arts of fishing and tools they use. But maybe, you just wondering , how did a Galician use to live 200 years ago? In order to get an unforgettable experience is necessary to visit a traditional Galician house, a place to feel, understand and know our culture deeper. We assure you that you won't regret it. We start the route off, doing a boat trip along the estuary of Arousa in order to get to know first-hand how fishermen and shellfish catchers work and what kind of tools they use. Specialized guides will explain you how every tool have been used during time. After finishing the boat trip we will visit one of the last tide mills well conserved in Galicia.
Last but not least we will visit a traditional house of the late 19th century, early 20th century located in San Vicente del Grove, here, we will discover how Galicians lived during that period and we will have a special lunch.
Always! wear comfortable footwear and appropriate clothes as well as some water and fruit or snacks, In case of a rainy or cold day ( bear in mind we are in Galicia) bring suitable clothing. Scorching days put some sun cream, bring a cap or something else you consider.
