It’s definitely a day to savor before starting your journey.
In this first stage of the Camino Primitivo from Lugo to Santiago, you’ll leave Lugo through the oldest gate in the Roman wall, heading towards the San Lázaro area, where you’ll cross an ancient Roman bridge.
Soon, you’ll enter lush, wooded areas that allow you to relax and enjoy nature. A few kilometers before reaching Ferreira, you can take a short detour to visit the Church of Santa Eulalia de Bóveda, built over an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Cybele.
A few kilometers later, you’ll arrive at the stage’s endpoint in Ponte Ferreira, where you can visit its ancient Roman bridge and enjoy the natural surroundings.
The next day, you’ll leave Ponte Ferreira and continue toward Melide.
Following the path through Toques, you’ll reach the Sierra de O Careón, where you can enjoy stunning views of the area. After a short rest, you’ll descend to complete the stage in Melide, where the Camino Primitivo joins the French Camino.
Upon arriving in Melide, your first stop should be to enjoy a tapa of pulpo (octopus) and soak in the lively atmosphere. After savoring this local delicacy, you can visit the Museo da Terra, the Church of Santa María de Melide, or see Galicia’s oldest cruceiro (stone cross), said to date back to 1502.
This stage is also short but slightly more challenging than the previous one due to its higher elevation gain. You’ll go from Melide, known for its octopus, to Arzúa, famous for its cheese—another gastronomic adventure!
Leaving Melide, you’ll enter native woodlands that offer peace and tranquility. In Ribadixo de Abaixo, you can even take a refreshing dip if the weather is nice. After a short break, it’s just a few more kilometers to reach Arzúa.
Once in Arzúa, be sure to try the local Arzúa-Ulloa cheese—you won’t regret it! You can also visit the 16th-century Magdalena Chapel or the 17th-century Church of Santiago de Boente.
You’re almost there! The penultimate stage takes you from Arzúa to O Pedrouzo.
This stage is quite comfortable and enjoyable, passing landmarks like the Church of San Pedro de Lema and the Fountain of Santa Irene along the way.
In O Pedrouzo, you can visit the Church of Santa Eulalia de Arca or the Church of Santa María de Castrofeito before the final push to Santiago.
Day 6, the final stage! You’ll leave O Pedrouzo heading toward Monte do Gozo, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of the towers of Santiago’s Cathedral—your goal is almost in sight.
After taking in the spectacular view of Santiago, you’ll descend into the historic city center, finally reaching your destination at the Plaza del Obradoiro.
Congratulations—mission accomplished!
