Stages
Your journey begins by visiting one of the most historic cities in Galicia.
Pontevedra stands out for its beautiful old town and for being one of the most sustainable cities in Europe.
The most important landmarks to visit are: the Church of the Peregrina, the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor, the ruins of the Church of Santo Domingo, and the Convent of San Francisco.
In this first stage, leaving Pontevedra, you’ll follow a very pleasant path passing through vineyards and ancient Roman roads.
Halfway through, you’ll reach San Mauro and then continue towards the Agra River to arrive at Caldas de Reis, known for its hot springs. The town has numerous Roman archaeological remains and has been a mandatory stop for pilgrims coming from the south since the Middle Ages.
After spending the night in Caldas de Reis, you’ll continue walking along peaceful paths until reaching Pontecesures and its Roman bridge. A couple of kilometers further, you’ll arrive in Padrón.
In Padrón, a visit to the Church of Santiago is a must, where you’ll find “the Pedrón” under the altar— the stone believed to have been used to tie the boat that carried the body of Saint James from Jerusalem. According to tradition, this is also the place where Saint James is said to have preached for the first time during his time in Spain.
In addition to the Church of Santiago, it’s also recommended to visit the house of Rosalía de Castro or the Camilo José Cela Museum.
In this final stage, you’ll depart from Padrón heading towards Santiago de Compostela.
You’ll pass through small villages like Iría Flavia and A Escravitude before venturing into the forest.
After walking about ten kilometers through fields and eucalyptus forests, you’ll arrive in the great city of Santiago and finally reach the Plaza del Obradoiro.
Congratulations, you’ve reached your goal!
