Day 1: Pontevedra

Your adventure begins in the city of Pontevedra, a stately yet modern city that will not leave you indifferent.

Of the countless places to visit in this city, which has won important awards such as the European Union's prize for sustainable urban mobility, we would highlight: the Virgen de la Peregrina Church, which dates from the 18th century and is the patron saint of the city, the 13th century Convent of San Francisco, the Plaza de la Leña, the Ruins of Santo Domingo, the Alameda and the Museum of Pontevedra.

For all these reasons, Pontevedra is an ideal place to start the Variante Espiritual del Camino Portugués.

Day 2: Pontevedra - Armenteira (14,4 mi)

In this first stage you will leave Pontevedra by the bridge of A Barca, after crossing the bridge of A Barca, you will enter to the council of Poio, following the coastline you will arrive at one of the most picturesque villages of Galicia, Combarro.

Combarro is a beautiful fishing village very well preserved, its old town was declared a site of artistic interest in 1972, with its sailor's houses and its 60 hórreos (raised granaries) overlooking the sea.

After leaving Combarro, you will go up to the Loureiro viewpoint, an exceptional place where you can enjoy one of the best views of the Pontevedra estuary. After taking a break, you will continue ascending until you finish the stage in Armenteira.

In Armenteira you can visit the magnificent Cistercian monastery of Santa María de la Armenteira and its well-preserved 17th century cloister.

Day 3: Armenteira - Vilanova de Arousa (14,04 mi)

After sleeping in Armenteira, you will start the day doing one of the most beautiful stretches of the Variante Espiritual Route, the famous Ruta da Pedra e do Auga, a superlative natural spot where tranquillity and disconnection is linked to the historical environment of the area. Its different waterfalls and mills will remind you of this beautiful cultural past.

Along the way you will pass through different councils such as Meis, Ribadumia and Pontearnelas.

After finishing the section of the Ruta da Pedra e do Auga, you will continue walking through an area of vineyards until you reach the end of the stage in Vilanova de Arousa.

In Vilanova de Arousa, you can visit the house-museum of Ramón del Valle Inclán, one of the most famous Galician-born contemporary writers in Spain, or the beautiful church of Santa María de Caleiro.

Day 4: Traslatio Vilanova de Arousa - Padrón (17,14 mi)

This third stage, before joining the Camino Portugués way in Pontecesures, can be done by boat.

From the port of Vilanova de Arousa you will make the famous Traslatio, a beautiful route along the estuary of Arousa, crossing the river Ulla.

Once you reach Pontecesures you will continue walking until you finish the stage in Padrón.

Padrón is the land of great writers such as Rosalía de Castro or the Nobel Prize for literature in 1989, Camilo Jóse Cela. Moreover, you can´t forget  the most famous peppers in Galicia, some are hot and some are not!

Day 5: Padrón- Santiago de Compostela (15,16 mi)

In this last stage, you will leave Padrón towards Iria Flavia and A Escravitude.
